WPA Slave Narratives
From OHA Wiki
Introduction
The issue of slavery in the history and memory of the United States has been a question that both the government and historians have had to deal with for many years. Over and over again compromises were made, including the Three-Fifths Compromise and the Missouri Compromise, to try and appease both political parties on the issue of slavery. Unfortunately, the issue would not be resolved until after the Civil War and the signing of the Fourteenth Amendment. Today, historians are fighting another battle over slavery, and that battle is whether to use the WPA (Works Progress Administration) slave narratives as historical documents and to include them in their research, where these narratives would help shape conclusions of what slavery was like.
